The book includes the complete text of Marx's Communist Manifesto and examines it alongside Vann's discussion of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address.
Vann's professional background informs the perspective of the work. She earned a B.S.N. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1974 and an M.S.N. from the University of Tennessee in 1986. Her primary interests include nursing and health promotion. She has also been involved in American politics, including a 2010 candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia.
